Algar do Carvão, located on Terceira Island, is the only volcano in the world that can be visited inland.
Algar do Carvão is an extinct volcanic cone, formed around 500 thousand years ago. Its magma chamber was formed by the eruption of lava and ash, which were later solidified.
A visit to Algar do Carvão is a unique experience, which takes place throughout the year, and allows visitors to see the interior of a volcano in a safe and controlled way. Lasting around 45 minutes, visits include a descent of 400 steps to the bottom of the magma chamber. The path is winding and narrow, but well lit.
At the bottom of the magma chamber, visitors can see a variety of volcanic rock formations, including stalagmites, stalactites and columns. It is also possible to see the incandescent lava that is still found inside the volcano.
Although there are other volcanoes in the world that are partially visitable, Algar do Carvão is the only one that allows a complete visit to its interior.
